My bff Ash is back (YAY!) and we went out shopping last night. On a whim I endded up buying the 1995 Sense sense sensibility 1995and Sensibility movie (only $5.04 at Target!). Haven’t watched it yet… I think, since it’s Ash’s fault anyway, That she has to watch it with me!!

I can’t believe all the people who are in this movie! Hugh Grant?! Alan Rickman?! Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet?!  Who ISN’T in this movie? I also had a little giggle when I saw that the director is Ang Lee.  Teehee~  I have hope for this movie.  I need to familiarize myself with the story, anyway. Before I know it, Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters will be out!  Need to read the original, too, of course…

Unrelated, I know that some of the pictures I’ve been using don’t seem to be working. I’ve uploaded them through WP so I don’t know why there’s a problem, but it seems to be with the thimbnail pictures only… will work on this…

Pride and Prejudice, book (1813)
Vintage Classics
page count: 368
ISBN: 978-0-307-38686-1

Finally!!  After watching the movies, I thought to myself  “hm, well, I could always read the book…”.  So I did.

I really do love these Vintage Classic covers! All the Jane Austin novels by them have similar artwork (I’ve got Mansfield Park and Emma, too).  I love reading a pretty book!

Even though, in comparison to the movies, the book can feel a bit laborious, it’s still a good read.  As usual, not everything makes the cut for the movie, so there’s still something new to discover.  My personal discovery was getting into Miss Bingley’s head.  I never got the vibe from either movie that she wanted to marry Darcy (I just thought she was a bitch), or that she wanted her brother to marry Miss Darcy (what a family they’d make!).  Trouble!  Knowing that just makes it so much juicer! Drama drama drama~ Not to mention that I FINALLY found out what Darcy’s name was!

*drumroll* Fitzwilliam Darcy *gasp*

That’s why they just call him Darcy. Oh snap!

(And if they call him Fitzwilliam in either one of those movies, I either blocked it out or just missed it completely.)

Don’t bitch about it. I’m sorry if you were scarred for life because some english teacher made you read it and write a paper on it and now you can never enjoy it. I feel the same way about The Scarlet Letter.  Just read the book. Do it.

Pride and Prejudice, the movie (2005)
Darcy: Matthew Macfadyen
Lizzy: Keira Knightley
run time: 128 min

After watching the P&P 1995 mini series, I thought I’d revisit the 2005 movie.  I’d seen it when it first came out but hadn’t cared enough to really get into it.  I vaguely remembered that the guy had been sorta interesting…

It’s hard to chose between Colin Firth’s Darcy and Matthew Macfadyen’s Darcy.  Both are enjoyable.  I think Matthew’s is moodier and darker, which has a bit more sex appeal.  But I couldn’t choose between them if they were both standing in front of me! OMG! And think of all the other Darcy’s that are out there that I haven’t discovered yet!

It’s also easier to follow when characters like Mr and Mrs Hurst get cut out.  Kelly Reilly as Miss Bingley is more than enough of a stuck up bitch to make up for the loss of her missing sister, and even in the 1995 adaptation all Mr Hurst did was sleep on the sofa. Even though I usually like a movie to stick as close to the book as possible, I don’t think it was a bad choice. *thumbs up*

I don’t hate Keira Knightley as much as I once did (still don’t care for her though), and I really loved this movie the second time around.  Something about the movie cast is rich, exotic, and absolutly perfect. Judi Dench (of James Bond fame) as Lady Catherine de Bourg makes you want to crawl into a corner and die because you are so unworthy of even looking at her likeness on your TV box.  I recommend curling up with some Stouffer’s chicken alfredo stir fry and watching this movie.

PandPminiseries1995

Pride and Prejudice, the BBC mini series (1995)
Darcy: Colin Firth
Lizzy: Jennifer Ehle
run time: 300 min

My “affliction” first began as my freshmen year of college came to an end.

Stuck between the stupidity of my 3 roommates and the idiocy of a very dense boy, I turned to my best friend’s place of work as a refuge.  Down in the basement of the campus library was the schools archive of music and movies.  And that is where I saw the super fancy Pride and Prejudice box DVD set, set up on a pedestal, calling to me.  So I checked it out and took it home.  And so it began.

I, like so many before me, fell in love with Darcy.  If you’re a guy, you’ll never understand it.  I don’t think we women really do, either.  Think, for a minute, about the Phantom of the Opera.  The guy is facially deformed, lives under an opera house, is social inept and basically insane.  But the women LOVE him (yes, I am one of those women).  His appeal is he’s a “bad boy”. Now back to Darcy.  He’s not insane or deformed, but he needs some help when it comes to relating to people.  More importantly, he’s rich! He’s no bad boy, but he’s no nice guy either (if you want nice, Bingley is all yours). He’s brooding and moody and he makes women swoon. Plus, he’s just fun. There’s nothing better than watching cool-and-collected Darcy have a melt-down of nerves when he tries to propose to Lizzy. That moment is priceless.

I did end up having to pay a late fee because I didn’t return the DVDs on time, but it was so worth it.

As for the series itself, FABULOUS. Love the actors (even if Ehle has a slight resemblance to my hateful roommate…). If you’re new to Jane Austen/Pride and Prejudice, it might be a bit long (unless you just love Colin).  Girls, be kind to your boyfriends and don’t force them to sit through this. Guys, if you do sit through this whole thing, you earn 4000 Awsome Boyfriend points.  Sometimes it is a bit tough to follow, especially if you haven’t read the book, because they keep most of the characters and plot intact (unlike the 2005 movie, which cuts out some minor characters to keep things simple).  But I recommend it.  Everytime you watch it you’ll see something new.

Pride and Prejudice! The journey begins.

pandpcomiccutWhen Jane Austen first sat down to write Pride and Prejudice, I doubt she realized what would be spawned from her book. First published on January 28th, 1813, it has inspired movies, sequels, fanfics, and God knows what else.

I watched the 2005 movie when it first came out on DVD.  At the time, I vehemently hated Keira Knightley and thus was determined to never like the movie.  It wasn’t until my freshmen year of college that I truely fell in love with the story and the characters.  I found refuge from my roommates and stupid boys in the eyes of Colin Firth’s Mr Darcy.  Since then I have been hooked.
